Ebook About Twelve years ago Matthew "the Rocket" Rising had it all. Married to his high school sweetheart and one of the winningest quarterbacks in the history of college football, he was the number one NFL draft pick. But on the night of the draft, he plummeted from the pinnacle of esteem. Falsely accused of a heinous crime with irrefutable evidence, it seemed in an instant all was lost -- his reputation, his career, his freedom, and most devastatingly, the love of his life. Having served his sentence and never played a down of professional football, Matthew leaves prison with one goal -- to find his wife, Audrey, whom no one has seen since the trial. He returns to an unwelcoming reception from his Gardi, Georgia, hometown to learn that Audrey has taken shelter from the media with the nuns at a Catholic school. There she has discovered a young man with the talent to achieve the football career Matthew should have had. All he needs is the right coach. Although helping the boy means Matthew violates the conditions of his release and -- if discovered -- reincarceration for life, he'll take the chance with hope of winning back Audrey's love.Book A Life Intercepted: A Novel Review :
I really enjoyed this book, but then...I’m a pretty big fan of Charles Martin. Probably the most important element in this book is the the deeply meaningful , crystal clear demonstration of the self inflicted prison unforgiveness brings...and the incredible freeing power of being able to forgive...forgiveness of others and forgiveness of self.My only complaint...the main character is simply too good...almost a superhero in his athletic abilities. If Matthew Rising had been a little more realistic in his abilities, I would have given this book a solid 5 out of 5.But, to those who read this review...DON’T STOP READING ONCE THE STORY IS DONE! While I enjoyed the story, Mr. Martin’s deeply honest self assessment in “An Author’s Note” absolutely made this book. In this section, he clearly demonstrates how a sport can be played at a high level, yet kept in a perspective of obedience to God and the need to trust Him...even if He takes you in a different direction. I’m a professor who is always searching for great quotes to use during classes. While reading the actual story, I highlighted a couple of things. But, as I read Mr. Martin’s notes, I highlighted several. Where Matthew Rising was too talented...simply too much a superhero, Charles Martin was incredibly human, humble and willing to speak candidly about his shortcomings, his need for forgiveness and, most importantly...his journey to trust God completely. What he wrote speaks to anyone reading at deep, relatable level. I love this author's stories but I hesitated over this one. I'm a mom who disliked seeing her son get flung about in collisions on the football field while watching helplessly from the bleachers. The game itself has zero interest for me. But I knew that Charles Martin has the gift of making the ordinary memorable, and telling stories painfully dug out of deep places of suffering, and I thought, why don't I give it a go? So I did.The story really isn't about football--thought at one point I wondered how long it had taken the author to do enough research to get the locker room immediacy that is evident on every page (in the author's note you discover that he played--okay, that explains that). This story is about a broken man who learns that you can't fight hate and anger with hate and anger. It's a powerful message that goes way beyond the football field.Yes, maybe some of the things are over the top or even a tad unrealistic. But that's fiction for you. Both the hero and villain are larger-than-life. But the true story has to do with what the protagonist learned: there are worse imprisonments than prison.
